The sextant is used in navigation by sailors and seamen to measure the heights of celestial bodies as well as vertical or horizontal angles of terrestrial or terrestrial fixed objects, e.g. to measure the angle (height) of an intended celestial body (eg Sun, Moon, planets, stars), from the horizon.
